Daphne Loves Derby
January 19, 2006 @ The Bean Bar in San Diego, CA
Overall Rating: 8.5
Music Quality: 9.0
Production: 8.0
I went into the show not expecting much, maybe a boring acoustic set. Little did I know, I was in for a treat. Being new to the The Bean Bar, I was surprised that the actual coffee shop was so small; however, it had an intimate feeling that is hard to come by at larger venues. The band members hung out inside the shop mingling with their fans before the show. Daphne Loves Derby had set up on an outdoor stage in front of venue. They played an array of songs, from their old to their newly released tracks, such as “Hopeless Love,” “Come Winter,” “Tennis Court Soundtrack,” and “Sunday.” As usual, the guys brought a refreshing energy and enthusiasm to their show. Jason Call, the bassist, did his little dance without shoes and Kenny, the lead singer, engaged the crowd with his soothing voice. The full band played together for of the most songs except when Kenny slowed down the pace and played by himself. But what really captured my attention were the non-typical percussion instruments they brought – something one would not have seen in their usual sets. Complimenting their acoustic set, they brought bongo drums, shakers, and a few other usually foreign instruments to such a venue. All in all, the guys did a great job creating a personal atmosphere and making their fans feel welcome from the beginning until the end.
