Ok, so I got caught in the hype for this band, but it's the most founded 'hype' I've discovered in a long time. I threw this CD in and was instantly impressed by this "hxc-emo" style band. They blend pop, rock, hardcore, and emo in one hell-of-a-great CD.
This CD astonishes me, not only by it's huge variance in style, but by it's enormous containment of emotion. You can tell the members really feel and mean the words in songs like "Ghost Man On Third," when it builds up from a hugely melodic, typically emo singing to a yelling. And the melody of the chick singing behind is indescribeable; but I can say it sounds really amazing, almost eerie but very cool and innovative. Seriously, this CD is going to be in the top ten for 2002. The whole thing just rocks!
I love how bands seem to be maturing, and this band epitomizes what I mean; they know how to escape from the typical slightly while still retaining the charisma and melody that so many kids seem to dig nowadays. They even bring in a piano in "The Blue Channel" and a couple other songs.
Similiar artists? From Thrice to Brand New to label-mates Student Rick to Thursday, these guys are just amazing. I love his vocals, with their very familiar East Coast sound. Get this CD, now. As my friend said, simply, they are "trying to capture the sound of NJ emopunk pioneers Lifetime and early saves the day and throw in some metal and pop and dual vocals to create a sound that is melodic, heavy and poppy and manages to rock the shit out of you!!!!"
