In Anberlin's follow-up to their debut, "Blueprints For The Black Market," the band demonstrates an obvious growth and ability, with slower jams like "Amsterdam" and the incredibly dancey, energetic closer "Dance, Dance Christa Paffgen." The very instant the disc starts, one might be fooled into thinking the band hasn't changed, but as the songs progress, more and more clean guitars contrasting bouncy metal riffs showcase the band's ability to blend the style of metal and pop seamlessly.
Once again, the singer's voice sounds a little forced at moments, but often the melodies and soaring vocals are pretty impressive. The production, as expected for Tooth & Nail, is stellar, with blasting guitars and filling bass. Though the drums often sound a little plastic, the vocal melodies and guitars are especially stellar.
If you are into the riffy, poppy melodies and harmonies that has made Anberlin a staple in the "metal pop" genre, you won't be disappointed with the rather flavorful, diverse sophomore full length from these guys. There's a much more somber, developed sound that is apparent here, and while it's not my favorite CD, it definitely beats out their debut and will please anyone who enjoys catchy, poppy, tasty melodies and energetic guitars.
